ketotifen
Therapeutic actions: this medication is used in combination with other medications for the treatment of mild allergic asthma in children. It is an anti-allergy medication that helps to reduce asthma symtpoms by reducing the body's response to allergens. These allergens can often trigger an acute asthma attack.
Indications: Asthma prophylactic, systemic
Antiallergic, systemic.
Contraindications and cautions: Symptomatic and preventive antiasthmatic drugs (e.g., b2-agonists such as salbutamol, sodium cromoglycate, corticosteroids such as beclomethasone, budesonide and fluticasone) already in use should not be reduced immediately when treatment with ketotifen is started. Follow your doctor's instructions closely. Since drowsiness may occur in the early stages of therapy, people engaging in activities requiring rapid and precise responses should be cautioned. Safety in human pregnancy has not been established. Ketotifen should therefore be given to pregnant women only in compelling circumstances. Ketotifen is excreted in breast milk; therefore mothers receiving ketotifen should not breast-feed.
Adverse effects: Incidents are low. The most common side effects are drowsiness, weight gain, rash, and breathing difficulties.
Interactions: - Ketotifen may interact with a number of different drugs. Be sure to tell any health professional involved in your care of all the drugs you are taking, including those that can be bought without a prescription.
- Ketotifen may increase the effects of sedatives, sleeping pills, antihistamines and alcohol.
