Drug name: Fungolon(generic Diflucan)

Active Ingredients:

  • Fluconasole
Therapeutic actions: Fungolon contains the active ingredient Fluconazole that belongs to a group of antifungal medications. Fluconazole works by inhibiting enzyme 14α- dimethylase and thus disturbs the production of ergosterol. Ergosterol is essential component of the fungi cell. Insufficiency of ergosterol leads to increase permeability of the fungi cells, making them unstable. This is ultimately fatal for the fungi.

Indications: Fungolon is indicated to treat the following conditions caused by fungi:

  • Skin infections caused by fungi such as athlete's foot (tinea pedis), ringworm (tinea corporis), jock itch (tinea cruris), pityriasis versicolor,
  • Candida skin infections.
  • caused by Cryptococcus fungi (cryptococcosis), including cryptococcal meningitis and infections affecting the lungs or skin.
  • of the male genitals and/or foreskin (candidal balanitis) caused Candida albicans
  • Candida infections of the linings of the mouth (oral thrush), urinary tract, throat, lungs, bloodstream, heart, or other widespread infections of the internals.
  • Vaginal thrush(vaginits) caused by Candida albicans.
  • Prophylaxis of a disease caused by Cryptococcus fungi, eg cryptococcal meningitis, in patients with AIDS.
  • Preventing fungal infections caused by fungi in patients with a weakened immunity and low white blood cell counts due to chemotherapy, radiotherapy or bone marrow transplants.

Contraindications and cautions:
Fungolon should not be taken in or hypersensitivity to Fluconazole or other anti-fungal azole preparations, eg clotrimazole, ketoconazole, itraconazole and other.

Fungolon is contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Do not use Fungolon prior to talking with your doctor of you experience the following conditions:

  • Kidney and liver disorders
  • Cardiovascular diseases including heart diseases(heart rate or rhythm disturbances)
  • Low blood levels of calcium, magnesium or potassium.

Warning!
You should finish the prescribed course of treatment even if you better or seem that infection has cleared up.
Regularly check your liver function in prolonged use of Fluconazole.

Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Fungolon will experience it or any other.

  • Digestive system: Abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting, taste changes, flatulence, dyspepsia
  • CNS: headache, seizures, dizziness
  • Liver disorders
  • High blood levels
  • reactions: skin rash
  • Decreased blood potassium levels
  • Decrease in the number of white blood cells

Avoid concomitant use of Fluconazole and cisapride and terfenadine.
Fluconazole enhances the anti-blood-clotting effects of anticoagulants such as nicoumalone and warfarin
Rifampicin (used for tuberculosis) reduces the blood level of fluconazole resulting in decreased therapeutic action.
Fluconazole may increase the blood levels of the following medications:

  • benzodiazepines
  • repaglinide
  • rifabutin
  • ciclosporin
  • phenytoin
  • sulphonylureas used to treat diabetes, eg glibenclamide, glipizide
  • tacrolimus
  • theophylline
  • zidovudine
