Active Ingredients:
- Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) + Triamterene
Therapeutic actions: Triampur is a combine preparation that belongs to a group of medicines called diuretics or “water pills”. The medication exerts diuretic and hypotensive action.
Therapeutic effect of HCTZ is associated with interfering with the reabsorption of sodium, chloride, magnesium and water in distal nephron. HCTZ also inhibits the elimination of calcium ions and uric acid. As a result, Triampur increases the amount of salt and water which are removed by the kidney from the blood. This lowers blood volume making possible to reduce high blood pressure and help with water retention.
Hydrochlorothiazide always causes low potassium levels in the blood. However, Triamterene being potassium sparing water pill increases potassium levels. Thus, the combination of HCTZ and Triamterene contributes to the balance of potassium levels.
Indications: Triampur is indicated in the following conditions:
- Controlling high blood pressure (hypertension)
- Treating water retention (edema).
Contraindications and cautions: Triampur is contraindicated in the following conditions:
- Anuria
- Chronic kidney failure
- Acute glomerulonephritis
- Severe liver diseases
- Hypovolemia
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- High potassium levels(hyperkalemia)
- Hypersensitivity to sulfanilamids
Necessarily talk with your doctor if you experience the following conditions:
- Liver disease, including cirrhosis
- Kidney failure
- Bronchial asthma
- Kidney stone disease
- Diabetes
- Systemic lupus erythematosus
- Gout
- Fluid problems
- Electrolyte problems
- Deficiency of folic acid
- People under 18 years of age
- Acidosis
Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Triampur will experience it or any other.
- Digestive system: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, dry mouth, thirst
- CNS: tremor, drowsiness, tiredness, headache, spasms of the calf muscles
- Cardiovascular system: increased heart rate, decreased blood pressure, disorder of the heart rhythm, tendency to faintness, acute liver failure
- Metabolism: increased amount of nitrogen-containing substance in the blood, disorder of the water-electrolyte balance
- Hematopoietic system: anemia, thrombocytopenia,
- Skin allergic reactions: hives, rash, Quinke's edema, fever, anaphylactic reaction, severe inflammation of the blood levels, pulmonary edema
- Other: jaundice, vision problems

- ACE inhibitors
- Angiotensin II receptor blockers
- Corticosteroids
- Laxatives
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAID's)
- Potassium-containing products
Water pills(spironolactone)
- Blood thinners(warfarin)
- Cardiac glycosides(digoxin)
- Lithium preparations
- Amiloride
- Amphotericin B
- Antifungal agents
