Therapeutic actions:
Levomycetin eye drops contains the active ingredient chloramphenicol that belongs to a group of medicines called antibiotics. antibiotics are used in the treatment of bacterial infection.
Chloramphenicol possesses a broad-spectrum action. It means that is effective against wide variety of bacteria that cause infection. It is effective against Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, some species Enterobacter (Aerobacter), Neisseria, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp. (â ò.÷. Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus hemolyticus), Moraxella lacunata, Rickettsia and mycoplasma. Chloramphenicol doesn't affect Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Chloramphenicol works by inhibiting the production of proteins that are essential for the bacteria to grow and reproduce.
Indications:
Various types of bacteria can cause eye infection called bacterial conjunctivitis. Levomycetin is administered into the eye to treat this condition. Application directly into the eye allows Levomycetin to affect directly the bacteria that cause bacterial conjunctivitis.
Contraindications and cautions:
You should not use Chloramphenicol eye drops :
- If you have hypersensitivity or allergy to any of Levomycetin (chloramphenicol) eye drops ingredients.
You should talk with your health care provider prior to taking chloramphenicol eye drops:
- If you have personal or family history of abnormalities in the numbers of blood cells.
- If you have had problems with blood cells during previous use of Levomycetin.
- If you are pregnant
- If you are breastfeeding
Warning!
- Do not take chloramphenicol eye drops by mouth
- Do not touch the tip of the tube to your eye or any surface in order to avoid contaminating the medication by the microorganisms.
- Levomycetin drops may cause blurry vision after the application into your eye. Do not drive or operate machinery until this has worn off.
- Do not wear contact lenses during you are taking Levomycetin.
- You should finish the prescribed course of chloramphenicol, even if you feel better and it seems the infection has cleared up.
- Do not take chloramphenicol eye drops for longer than your doctor has prescribed you.
- Ask immediately your health care provider if your symptoms became worse or if you suppose you have new bacterial or viral infection.
Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using chloramphenicol eye drops will experience it or any other.
- Burning or stinging sensation in the eye.
- allergic reactions.
