Therapeutic actions:
Gentagut contains the active ingredient gentamicin sulfate. Gentamicin belongs to a group of antibiotics called aminoglycosides.
Gentamicin possesses a wide spectrum action. It is effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Proteus spp., Enterobacter spp, Providencia stuartii, Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., Acinetobacter spp., Staphylococcus spp.
Gentamicin works by causing the bacteria to produce abnormal proteins which are essential for the bacteria to grow and multiply. It does it by penetrating the bacterial cell and disrupting the protein's synthesis.
Indications: Gentamicin drops is used to treat infection of the eye and ear caused by bacteria. Eye and ear inflammation involves:
- Acute and chronic conjunctivitis
- Cornea ulcers
- Keratitis
- Keratoconjuctivitis
- Acute and chronic iritis
Gentamicin drops is also used to treat the purulent complications after ocular surgery.
Contraindications and cautions:
You should not use Gentamicin sulfate:
- if you have hypersensitivity or allergy to any of Gentamicin sulfate ingredients
- if you have perforated eardrum (increased risk of hearing damage)
- if you are pregnant
- if you are breastfeeding
- in kidney dysfunction(kidney failure)
- in vestibular apparatus disorders
- in auditory vestibular apparatus
Warning!
- Do not wear contact lenses during treatment with gentamicin sulfate opthalmic solution
- prolonged use of gentamicin drops may cause eye disorders
- Prolonged use may lead to super infection due to micro-organisms, including fungi.
Gentamicin side effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Gentamicin sulfate will experience it or any other.
- Irritation
- allergic reactions(redness of the eye)
- Burning sensation
- Itching
- Stinging in the eye
- Dermatitis

Combined use of gentamicin eye drops are and cyclosporin or cisplatin may increase the risk of kidney damage.
Combined use of Gentamicin and cisplatin and furosemide may increase the risk of damage of the ear drum.
Gentamycin sulfate increases the effect of muscle relaxants.
Gentamicin sulfate decreases the effect of neostigmine and pyridostigmine.
