Therapeutic actions:
Hydrocortisone belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteroids. Corticosteroids are natural substances that are produced by the adrenal glands. Hydrocortisone works by inhibiting the release of certain chemicals that are important in development of inflammation processes. These chemicals known as prostoglandins have been shown to cause disruption of the blood-aqueous humor barrier,
increase of vascular permeability and leukocytosis. They also dilate blood vessels inside the eye , causing increased intra-ocular pressure .
Indications: Hydrocortisone eye ointments is used to treat:
- Conjunctivitis
- Blepharitis
- Blepharoconjunctivitis
- Keratitis
- Keratoconjunctivitis
- Episcleritis
- Dacryocystitis
Contraindications and cautions:
You should not use Hydrocortisone eye ointment
- in Glaucoma
- if you have infection of the eye caused by Herpes simplex virus
- if you have hypersensitivity or allergy to any of Hydrocortisone ingredients
- if you experience redness of the eye due to unknown causes
- if you have viral, fungal or bacterial in the treatment area
Talk with your health care provider prior to taking this medicine:
- if you are pregnant
- if you breastfeeding
Warning!
- Your health care provider should regularly examine your eye condition while you taking this medication, as it can sometimes cause eye disorders. Consult your health care provider if you experience any disturbances in your vision while taking hydrocortisone.
- Hydrocortisone may cause blurry vision. Do not drive or operate machinery while taking this medicine.
- Prolonged or intensive application of Hydrocortisone may lead to an increase of intra ocular pressure , cataracts, glaucoma or damage of the optic nerve.
- Do not take this medicine by mouth
- Inappropriate use of hydrocortisone can cause blindness.
Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Hydrocortisone will experience it or any other.
- Spreading and worsening of infection
- Vision disorders
- Burning
- Itching and painful sensations in the eye
- glaucoma (increased pressure inside the eye)
