Drug name: Medexol
Active Ingredients:
dexamethasone
Therapeutic actions: Medexol contains the active ingridient Dexamethasone. Dexamethasone belongs to a type of drugs, known as corticosteroids, that are used to reduce eye inflammation(redness, irritations,swelling or burning of the eye). Dexamethasone interacts with specific protein receptors, regulating the expression of the corticoid- dependant genes. It also works by stabilizing the lysosomal ferments, inhibiting the mitosis and migration of leukocytes. As a result, the number of chemicals that are important in inflammation precess is decreased.
Indications:
Medexol is used to treat:
- eye inflammation including conjunctivitis, keratoconjuctivitis or following surgery.
- eye injury caused by chemical substances, heat burns, radiation or by penetration of a foreign object.
- Iritis, iridocyclite, scleritis .
- chorio-iditol, the chorio-retinitis
Contraindications and cautions:
You should not use dexamethasone :
- if you have an allergy to any of Medexol ingridients
- if you suffer from eye disease producing pus
- if you have eye fungal infection
- if you wear soft contact lens
- if you experience tuberculosis infection that affects the eye
- if you experience viral infections of the eye(eg. Herpes Simplex, chicken pox)
- if you experience increased pressure inside the eye
You should tell your health care provider prior to taking Medexol :
- if you are pregnant
- if you are breastfeeding
- if you have glaucoma or diabetes
Medexol Warning!
- Your health care provider should regularly examine your eye condition while you taking this medication, as it can sometimes cause eye disturbances. Consult your health care provider if you experience any disturbances in your vision while taking dexamethasone eye drops.
- Dexamethasone may cause blurring of vision. Do not drive or operate machinery while taking this medicine.
- Prolonged or intensive application of Medexol may lead to an increase of intra ocular pressure , cataracts, glaucoma or damage of the optic nerve.
- Do not take this medicine by mouth
- Inappropriate use of dexamethasone can cause blindness.
Medexol side effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using dexamethasone will experience it or any other.
- Partial vision loss due to cataracts
- Stinging, burning or pain on application
- Eyelid drooping
- Increased eye pressure
- Hypersensitivity to bright light
