Therapeutic actions:
How Piracetam works is not fully understood. It increases blood flow and oxygen consumption by the brain cells.
It also improves the function of the mediator acetylcholine via muscarinic cholinergic (ACh) receptors which are included in memory processes. Piracetam may have an effect on NMDA glutamate receptors. They are involved with learning and memory processes. . Finally, Piracetam modulates ion channels (Ca2+, K+) so it may exert its global effect on brain function.
Indications: Piracetam is used to regulate cerebral function.
It improves cognition and memory, slows down brain aging, increases blood flow and oxygen to the brain, aids stroke recovery, improves Alzheimer's, Down's Syndrome, dementia and dyslexia.
Contraindications and cautions:
You should not use Piracetam :
- if you have an allergy to Piracetam or other pyrrolidone derivatives
- if you have decreased kidney function (renal creatinine clearance of less than 20 ml per minute)
- if you have decreased liver function
- if you are under 16 years of age
- if you have cerebral haemorrhage
- if you are pregnant
- if you are breastfeeding
- You should talk with your health care provider prior to taking Piracetam in elderly people.
- Piracetam can cause drowsiness so it is not recommended to drive or operate machinery during the treatment.
Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Piracetam will experience it or any other.
