Drug name: Fareston
Active Ingredients:
- Toremifene
Therapeutic actions: Toremifene belongs to a group of anti-estrogen, anti-tumor medications. It works by binding to specific estrogen cell's receptors and disturbing the production of estogen's complex with 17-beta estradiol. Toremifene suppresses stimulating effects of estrogens to the DNA synthesis and cells replication. Anti-tumor action is associated with induction of the growth factor, that suppresses tumor formation, as well as the complex influence on the cancer-causing regulation resulting in apoptosis of the tumor cells.
Indications: Fareston is used in the first line treatment of oestrogen-receptor dependent metastatic breast cancer.
Contraindications and cautions: Fareston should not be used in:
- Increased hypersensitivity to Toremifene
- Thromboembolia in anamnesis
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
Fareston should be used with caution in: hyperplasia of endometrium, leucopenia, trombocytopenia , hypercalcemia.
Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Fareston will experience it or any other.
The most common hepatotoxicity, nausea, increases body perspiration, drowsiness, hypercalcemia, vision disorders, high risk of heart attacks, thrombembolia of the pulmonary artery, thrombophlebitis or clottage.

- Water pills(thiazide-type diuretics) in combination with Fareston may cause increased calcium blood levels.
- Fareston may enhance the effects of blood-thinners
- Cytochrome inductors(carbamazepine, phenobarbutal, phenythoin) decreases the blood levels of toremifene
- Cytochrome inhibitors(erythromycin, macrolides, ketoconazole and antifungal preparations) lower the toremifene metabolism.
