Active Ingredients:
- Ondansetron
Therapeutic actions: Zofran is an antiemetic drug that works by reducing the activity of the vagus nerve which normally activates the vomiting center in medula oblongata and inhibits serotonin receptors that are triggered by chemotherapy. It does not manifest any effect on motion sickness or on dopamin and muscarinic receptors.
Indications: Zofren is used in prevention of nausea and vomiting caused by various conditions:
- Chemotherapy induced states
- Hyperemesis gravidarum in pregnancy
- Cyclic vomiting syndrome
- Postoperative state
Contraindications and cautions: Consult your doctor if you can use Ondansetron in the following cases:
- Hypersensitivity to Ondansetron or to other similar drugs.
- Liver disorders
- History of allergic reactions to any drugs or foods
- Long QT syndrome(heart problems)
- Phenylketonuria
Ondansetron has been assigned to FDA pregnancy category B. Consult your doctor before using it during pregnancy.
Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Zofran will experience it or any other. The side-effects include:
- Allergic reactions
- Vision impairment
- Fever
- decreased heart rate, problems breathing normally
- Agitation, shivers
- Fainting, light-headedness
- decreased urination
Other more common side-effects include:
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Tiredness
- Headache
- Dizziness
