Drug name: Danoptin
Active Ingredients:
- Lamotrigine
Therapeutic actions: Danoptin contains the active ingredient Lamotrigine that belongs to a group of medicines called anti-epileptic. By action on sodium channels in brain, Lamotrigine reduces excessive electrical activity.
Danoptin lowers the pathological activity of the neurons without affecting their function. Lamotrigine also inhibits the excessive release of amino acids ,thus prevents seizures or fits.
Indications: Danoptin is indicated in:
- Prevention of seizures associated with epilepsy(prevention of epilepsy and partial seizures)
- Severe childhood epilepsy known as Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.
- Trigeminal neuralgia associated with pain in gums, cheek, eyes, chin and lips.
- Bipolar disorders
Contraindications and cautions: You should not take Lamotrigine if any of the following conditions:
- Individual intolerance
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Children
Let your health care provider know in:
- Elderly age.
- Liver diseases and kidney diseases
- Parkinson's disease.
- Blood diseases
Warning!
- Danoptin may cause life-threatening skin rash. Stop using Danoptin if you develop first signs of skin rash.
- If you experience fever, swollen of the lymph nodes ,fever, inflammation of the mouth or lips, breathing disorders stop using Danoptin immediately.
- Danoptin may cause blood disorders. Seek medical care if you experience unusual bleeding while taking this drug.
- Do not suddenly stop taking Danoptin as you can experience withdrawal syndrome.
- You should regularly check you eyes condition while taking Danoptin. In some cases Danoptin can cause eye problems.
- Danoptin may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors.
Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Danoptin will experience it or any other.
- The most common side effects include: dizziness, double vision, blurred vision, nausea vomiting
- The less common side effects include: sore throat, flu-like symptoms, heartburn, diarrhea, weight loss, constipation, bronchitis, tremor, agitation, dyspepsia, confusion.

- Sodium valproate and valproic acid may increase Danoptin blood levels
- Hormonal birth control pills may reduce Danoptin therapeutic effect
- Carbamazepine, Phenobarbital, Phenythoin, Primidon or Rifampicin can also reduce lamotrigine blood levels.
- Danoptin may interact with St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum)
