Betadine

Drug name: Betadine

Active Ingredients:

  • Povidone-Iodine

Therapeutic actions: Betadine contains the active ingredient Povidone iodine that belongs to a group of antiseptics called iodophores. Being in contact with vaginal mucus membrane povidone iodine gradually and evenly release iodine, possessing wide spectrum of antibacterial activity. Iodine also exerts antifungal, antiprotozoal as well as disinfecting effect. Iodine works by blocking the amino groups of cellular proteins that is ultimately fatal for microorganisms.

Indications: Betadine vaginal suppositories are used to treat:

  • Acute and chronic vaginal inflammation caused by bacteria.
  • vaginal infection caused by fungi.
  • Genital herpes.
  • Vaginal infection caused by trichomonads, clamydia and gardnerella.

Betadine ointment is indicated in the treatment of burns, infectious ulcers and bed sores, skin infections, super infectious dermatosis , viral skin infections

Contraindications and cautions: You should not use Betadine in the following conditions:

  • Known hypersensitivity or allergy to povidone- iodine
  • Thyroid glands diseases such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis , nodular colloidal goitre or endemic goitre.
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • In children

You should Betadine with caution in decreased kidney function

Your health care provider should regularly monitor your thyroid gland function while taking Betadene.
