Active Ingredients:
- Metronidazole
Therapeutic actions: The active ingredient of Flagyl is metronidazole that belongs to a group of drugs called antibiotics. Metronidazole possesses a wide spectrum of antibacterial action. It is effective against anaerobic bacteria including Peptostreptococcus, Clostridium sp., Giardia intestinalis, Trichomonas vaginalis, Entamoeba histolytica, Lamblia,Bacteroides sp., Prevotella, Fusobacterium, Veilonella.
Flagyl (metronidazole) works by penetrating through protozoal and bacterial cells and interfering with their genetic material (DNA). It disturbs the genetic material making bacteria not possible to replicate new DNA. This is ultimately fatal for the bacteria and protozoa.
Indications: Flagyl ovuli are used to treat the following conditions:
- Vaginal infections caused by anaerobic bacteria or protozoa following any gynaecological surgery
- Trichomoniasis
- Lambliasis
- Non specific vaginitis
Contraindications and cautions: You should not use Flagyl:
- if you have hypersensitivity or allergy to metronidazole
- in pregnancy
- in breastfeeding
- in children
Warning!
- Flagyl ovuli are only for vaginal use.
- Do not use Flagyl ovuli during your menstrual period.
- The sexual intercourse while taking Flagyl is not recommended.
- If you use Flagyl for a long time regularly check your blood level.
- Stop using Flagyl if you experience hot flushes, nausea, abdominal cramps,vomiting or headache while taking this medication.
Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Flagyl will experience it or any other.
- Vaginal candidiasis(thrush)
- Discharges from the vagina
- Burning numbness, itching, irritation in the vagina
- Pelvic discomfort
- Abdominal pain
- Unpleasant taste
- Sensation of furry tongue
- Stomach disturbances including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Numbness in the extremities
- Darkened urine
- Menstrual discomfort or irregularity
- Vaginal spotting
- Swelling in the vulva

Pay attention to anti-blood-clotting (anticoagulant) drugs including warfarin. The combined use of Flagyl and anticoagulans may increase the risk of vaginal bleeding or clotting.
Flagyl may increase the blood levels of the following drugs:
- Ciclosporin
- Lithium
- Phenytoin.
- Fluorouracil
