Estradiol
Therapeutic actions: Estradiol is a naturally occurring female sexual hormone. The preparation is used as hormonal replacement therapy. During the perio of menopause the woman ovay glands start to produce less estrogen resulting in possible menopause symptoms that are eased or even stopped by using oestrogel. If hysterectomy has been performed on the patient then osetrogel can be used alone if not then progestin also must be administered to the patient. The gel is applied to the skin and estradiol is absorbed in to the blood through the skin.
Indications: The drug is used as a as a hormonal replacement therapy during menopause or as preventive treatment for osteoporosis that may occur due to excess bone loss after menopause.
Contraindications and cautions: The gel should be applied on healthy skin without any irritations as it is stated on the leaflet. The gel must nor be applied on the face breast or vaginal areas. Avoid eye contact. Avoid skin contact with other persons for not less then a few hours after applying the gel.
As usual for all hormonal replacement therapy there are a few rules that must be followed:
- Thorough examinations every 6 months.
- Breast examination for lumps every week(can be performed at home)
- If you have a history of heart disease or blood related disease be careful when using HRT's
- The medication may cause withdrawal effects
- After the last menses for a year or two if you do not want to get pregnant you should use contraceptives.
Oestogrogel should be used with caution in the following cases:
- Any type of cancer that is developing or family history of cancer disease
- Non-malignant inflammations and tumors
- Heart related problems or a history of heart related problems in your family
- Any type of blood disorders
- Long term inflammations
- Obesity
- Smoking
- Vein varicosis
- Liver or kidney disease
- Asthma
- Epilepsy
- Ear disorders
- Chloasma
- Diabetes mielitus
Oestrogel should not be used in the following circumstances:
- Breast cancer
- Estrogen stimulated cancer
- Endometrial hyperplasia
- Vaginal bleeding
- Problems with blood clotting
- Recent hear failure
- Angina pectoris
- Progressing liver disorder or a history of liver disease
- Porphyrias
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding.
Adverse effects: There are possible side-effects associated with this medicine that can affect individuals in different ways. If a side effect is stated here, that does not necessarily mean the fact that all people using Estradiol gel will experience it or any other.
- Changes in the breast size or tenderness etc.
- Head pain
- Vaginal breakthrough bleeding
- Abdominal pain , nausea, diarrhea, comiting.
- Swelling of the extremities
- Weight gain
- Skin irritation
- altered sex drive
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Hypertension
- Dizziness
- Gall bladder dysfunction
- Liver disorders
- Jaundice
- Chloasma
- Blood clotting
