Therapeutic actions: Clomifen belongs to a class of drugs called antiestrogens. It works by inhibiting the action of estrogen on the gonadotrope cells. Since the estrogen levels remain the same but the receptors are prevented from recycling it the organism is deceived and thinks that the levels of the hormone are lower then they actually are thus as a result hypotolamuses hormones stimulate the secretion of follicle stimulating hormones in the end leading to a higher rate of ovulation and possible pregnancy.
The drug may causes multiple ovulations and increases the chance of twins being born to 3-5% instead of 1% in normal conditions.
Indications: The drug is mainly used to stimulate ovulation in treatment of follicle hormone deficiency. Consult your doctor on other possible conditions that this drug ma be used for.
Contraindications and cautions: Clostilbegyt should not be taken if:
- You have hypersensitivity to any components of the preparation
- You are pregnant
- You are lactating
- You suffer from thyroid or other endocrine dysfunction
- You have endometrial hyperplasia
- You have undefined vaginal bleeding
- You suffer from liver dysfunction
- You have polycystic ovarian syndrome
- You have Uterine fibroids
The drug belongs to FDA pregnancy category X – meaning that it must not be used during pregnancy.
